Community Radio Is Here To Stay
Category : Success Stories
Community radio can be described as a radio service that offers another model of radio broadcasting other than commercial and public broadcasting. Community radios often serve specific geographic areas or communities. They usually broadcast content that is of interest to that area or community. For example, schools and universities have their own community radios that broadcast the latest information and news that the students need to be aware of. Community radios are often a non-profit organization and serve as a way for groups and communities to evolve together.
Currently, there are many community radio stations scattered all over the US and many more are on the way. These not for profit radio stations need to be celebrated for being able to hold their own ground. These community radio stations have been able to meet the running costs by playing on air advertisements for local businesses. Since these community radio stations rely a lot on volunteers, the running cost is also on the lower side. The volunteers in return get training and qualifications that is difficult to get elsewhere.
The community stations all over the US have shown how it is possible for communities to come together and do something that is beneficial. Each of these stations actually airs around 80 hours of original content that is produced locally. In order to protect the revenue of existing commercial radio stations, community radio stations are not allowed to raise more than fifty per cent of their income from advertisements. They need to obtain the remaining income from public sources like the local authorities. The community radio stations have been helping communities stay together and encourage the local talent as well. Although it might not have the resources of a commercial radio station, community stations are here to stay and continue broadcasting original content.
